Wednesday, July 15, marked a job shadowing event that helped shape the futures of disadvantaged teens in Orlando.
Boca Raton, FL - July 16, 2015
Young men and women aging out of the state foster care system spent the day traveling to various businesses in the area to take a closer look at the workforce by participating in a job shadowing day. These teens are graduating from high school, applying to college, and trying to find careers. What a great opportunity for them to see what really happens behind the scenes at different companies!
A special thanks goes out to The Apartment Association of Greater Orlando (AAGO) for making this event possible. They organized this job shadowing event with help from their partners at Goodwill Industries, The City of Life Foundation, and Community Based Care of Central Florida.
Two participants in the program spent the day with Justin Mainit, a business development representative from Baxter Restoration. Justin dedicated his time showing Ishauna and Shaunell the ins and outs of the restoration industry. They learned everything from project managing and administrative duties to business development and marketing. Ishauna, an artist with a drive to manage a business one day, was eager to learn about the construction industry. Shaunell, who hopes to be a math professor one day, crunched some numbers at a Baxter Restoration weekly marketing meeting using customer relationship management software.
These young women came from the Faine House to participate in this event. The Faine House is an organization that gives teens who have aged out of foster care a place to live and a chance to receive the help and guidance they need to enter the community self-assured and ready for adulthood. This house was made possible because of a partnership between Jeff Faine, a 10 year NFL vet, and The Children’s Home Society of Florida and opened its doors in November of 2013.
Ashley Kelley, a case manager at the Faine House, tells us “Job shadowing is a great opportunity for our residents to see what takes place in different facets of various companies. It brings them beyond what they see on TV and gives them some real world perspective”.
In addition to Baxter Restoration, five other companies also stepped forward to participate in this program on Wednesday:
Dominium - an affordable housing development and management company that provides individualized services to people in 18 states across the country.
King Management Service. LLC - a small boutique property management firm. For this event, Dominium partnered up with their larger company, A Green Property Manager (AGPM), to give these teens a well rounded experience.
PRG Real Estate Management Inc. - an apartment management company with 30 years experience transforming communities and providing residents with quality living.
Concord Management Limited - a property management company whose mission is to make available multifamily rental housing at affordable prices.
Affinity Waste Solutions - a company working specifically for apartment home residents, providing doorstep trash and recycling collection, dumpster cleaning and emptying, and Christmas tree disposal.
Thank you AAGO and partners for showing us that with teamwork, anything is possible. You may not be able to help everyone, but you can help someone!
